Bushabout - Nullarbor Links

As the saying goes
'Every Bloke has to have a SHED"

In Australia the term shed can be used to refer to any building that is not a residence and which may be open at the ends or sides, or both.

Like the dunny, the shed has an important place in Australian culture and mythology. It stands as a symbol of the Aussie male's ingenuity, a testimony to his ability to fix anything with a length of fencing wire, a hammer and a piece of 4" x 2".
Flicking thru the local paper (Port Lincoln Times) this particular 'SHED' stood out. Punched in the address on the GPS - Wow! Perfect - every things will fit and more!
Built in a residential area this BIG, no longer permitted

On hold until we return from holidays.

Then it's all happening - power supply

No house - but who needs it when you have a
5 star relocatable camp!
Complete with car port - larger than the average

Concertina doors - great for getting the van into the shed
= plenty of space.

Chook out on a test ride on his mates Harley. If you need any fishing gear, Chook now works Tuesdays & Wednesday at SPOT ON Camping & Fishing - Tasman Terrace, Port Lincoln. The building on the far left of the above photo. As directions in Australia are usually given in reference to PUB'S, its near the Pier Hotel.
The coffee next door is also good!
Boston Bay views from the block and shed roof even better!
View of Winter Hill, solar panels are up and producing power, along with our Bush Tracker in the yard, ready for Far West Coast Fishing and the Nullarbor Links.

Cousin,  Linden Masters dropped by to the
check out the SHED!
That's all we have in the SHED for now - time will_______!
The SHED spec's - 30' x 30' x 12', car port - 30' x 12' x 12' total block 708 sq Mtr. Space for a house one day perhaps!

Yes! finally on our way to Perth with several detours on the way. 1st stop, sticky buns and fresh bread
Dropped in to see Gary and Sue Laurie in Smokey Bay, they kindly gave us a feed of Oyster's!
http://www.kalgoorlie.com/nullarborlinks/course.asp
The above link gives all the details in reverse!
Ceduna tourist information office and signed up, and paid our fees to play the Longest Golf Course in the World - $70 each.
The 1st two holes are in Ceduna - Oyster Beds.
and Denial Bay. We later heard from others playing the Nullarbor Links, that  they actually went to Denial Bay several k's up the track looking for the golf hole.
Three holes in one day - Penong - WINDMILLS, when you next past thru you will understand to meaning for the hole being called WINDMILLS
Golden harvest!
Can you tell it's 'DAYLIGHT SAVING' in South Australia.

A few days at Scotts Beach
Several schools of Salmon - out to far to get a lure into them
Sand hill walking - Er! Sliding!
Rugged head land
More wild life at every turn - watch out where you step!
Great being able to just pull up at your Golf Hole - alas most parking area's are near the putting greens, so we infact walk the hole twice - we need the excersise
No we did not fall down a Wombat hole - but it was blowing a GALE - at least 50kph.
DETOUR - Head of the Bight - Mullaway fishing - Geues.
Or you can plod along GOLFING!!
We pulled up just 5k's from the Coombra Gate turn off - made good time from Geues - 1hr 50 minutes - no tree pruning required. All the extra effort going in paid off.
These folks Mike & Heather riding across the Nullarbor - strong head winds, hoping to make it to Perth by Christmas (this was 8th Nov)
After the sand hills and rocky track time to pump up the tires, if you could get thru the beastly HORSE FLIES / March flies. Sue was hiding in the van as suffers bad reactions from their bite, trying to get a blood meal!
Due to strong head winds we pulled over 30k's down the road, and even more March flies.
Sue started cooking up all our veggies before we crossed the Border into Western Australia.
Blowing a gale - just as well it's a Par 5 hole.
No I did not place the ball there!! That's the nature of the course, rabbit holes. Now your realy in trouble if it goes into a Wombat hole.
By the way we played our local rule - two ball better ball - sure helps!
Yep! It's still BLOWIN'
All suited up in his Star Trek gear - 'Trooper Trek 2011'. Pushing his cart across the Nullarbor
Magnificant Great Australian Bight cliffs - as we were taking photo's and admiring the scenery. A fellow behind us hurls what we thought was a rock over the cliff. We asked - Nah! he said - 'It's me Dad', been sitting on the mantle piece for months, figured he would like it out here. Been throwing his ashes all the way along the Bight.
One of the few places you can get down to any beaches along the Bight. No good fishing gutters, all rocky reef.

Yes! it's early - best part of the day!
The wind has not got up at this hour of the day, better driving both Golf & or Vehicle
What! only 1,462k's to PERTH, great! Close to half way from Adelaide - 1,320k's
Par 3 - Par & Bogey, respectivley

At least this guy's got a tail wind!

The Nullarbor Nymph, referring to supposed sightings of a half naked woman living amongst kangaroos on the Nullarbor Plain, was a hoax perpetrated in Australia between 1971 and 1972. The Hoax achieved it's aim - TOURIST!
Eucla's Golf hole - off the Eyre Hwy, at the local shooting range. The sign sum's it up!
Shooting Range club house - Okay, I will stand you can use my CHAIR. Little did he know!

Flocks of Budgies - silly buggers take off and circle back onto the road. One dessicated specimen in our tinnie when we off loaded
Wide open spaces out here, plenty of wild life
Look closely and see the EMU. At least it didn't steal our ball
Hole # 9 half way

Yes! they keep count of the Kangaroo's out here, it's called occupational therapy
This is a 1st and worth a photo - Sue's happy, it did help

Now what's with the camouflage! You will know when next out bush. It's a FLY net, to keep the pesky bugger away from protein in the form of any body moisture - In you Eye's, Up your Nose, nothing is sacred.

No the golf hole is not 90 miles it's____ At Caiguna roadhouse where it begins the most famous stretch of road in Australia, 90 miles of road - not one bend.
Yep! still heading in the right direction

HOG rally in Margeret River WA.
Well the road is straight for 146.6k's, and due the the remoteness of the area, an ideal location to put in an Emergency landing strip for the Royal Flying Doctor, or any other light air craft if they have miss calculated their fuel usage - Bugger head winds!

Par 3 - 175m
At Balladonia Motel
Skylab was a space research laboratory constructed by NASA, when in July 1979 it eventually succumbed to the Earth's  gravitational pull, re-entering the atmosphere and landing in fiery chunks around Balladonia.

Now you don't see this every day - pulled in for fuel, delivering the aircraft to it's new owner in Bunbury. From Parafiled Air Field across Yorke and Eyre Peninsula is the only concern in a single engine. The it's just a matter of following  the Eyre Hwy, if you have engine trouble there's a landing strip right below.

The lady on the back of this machine fell off, and stated 'no more'. Impressive machine!

"Keep FANG'S bowl Full" How many folks have turned the tap? Hint, we are hundreds on K's from any were, let alone piped water!

Bush Fire thru years ago, young trees just getting established

Just down the road fire missed this stretch.

Par 3 - 141m
At Fraser Range
The Fraser Range area is home to the world's largest Eucalyptus Hardwood Forest. The blackbutt, salmon gum and gimlet trees are a spectacular sight, often 20 to 30 metres tall, they attract an amazing collection of wildlife to the region.
The Fraser Range Station was first settled in 1872, making the station the first to be founded in the Nullabor Plain area. The station is comprised of vast open grass flats, upon which the shepherds moved sheep over 100 years ago. The shepherds moved their herds from flat to flat before returning to the Fraser Range homestead for shearing annually.
The station allows the international vistor to understand the old Australian saying "living off a sheep's back".
Great trees these Blackbutt, complete with power.

The folks in the vehicle in the back ground had NSW Rego. plates 'YIM_ _ _" YIM in Thai is 'SMILE', they sure got a kick out of that.

This is known as an Oiled Green!
Camped near Kalgoorlie, as the last two holes we near to book as they are on a recently opened course, reported to have invested 23 Million.

 Wow! real GRASS!

Check out the size of the grassed Fairways

Last hole - par 5

Great action!
Big putting green, this put could take awhile to get here!
What a way to finish the Nullarbor Links on these two world class holes. The course is rated # 27 in Australia after one full year of operation

A great activity to cross the Nullarbor, checked out a lot of places we may not have stopped at just driving to an end destination. Meet some interesting folks and shared stories and golfing tips, and what to expect.
As the saying goes!

 'Been There, Done That'
Now complete with a certificate!
